My solution is crazy simple - Wake up early and get to work! It doesn't matter if you are not a morning person - YOU WILL BE. I slashed my commute time in half just doing this, and got other time benefits from doing this:
- going to the grocery store at 3pm is a whole lot faster than 6 pm (when everyone else is trying to go)
- going to the pool to catch the 3:45 adult-only swim lets me get in and out for lap training
- basically, time savings get COMPOUNDED for everything else that you do
I live up I-270, and from where I live, you MUST leave before 6:30 am to not get stuck in 45+ minutes of traffic to get down 270. For example, three years ago I worked in Herndon, my first day, it took me two hours to get to work! I thought, "oh no", this is how long it's going to take me to get to work everyday? What have I done to myself?!
Well, I started leaving for work at 5:45am, this means getting up at 4:45am for me, I would get to work by 6:15. Most people didn't get in work that early, so I had another solution - go to the gym every morning (I was lucky enough to have a both a gym and shower in my work location - if you do I recommend this)! During that year in Herndon, waking up early, working out everyday, I was in THE BEST SHAPE OF MY LIFE!
My schedule is a little bit different now, but I still adhere to the leave early policy. I work in Vienna, leave by 6:15, get home by 3:00, and exercise in the afternoon to enjoy the great weather outside.
